The historic Queen Victoria Building in Australia is home to a safe where a letter allegedly written by Queen Elizabeth II is stored. It has been there for 36 years, but the letter won’t be opened until another 63. During a state visit to Sydney in November 1986, the Queen wrote the letter. The Queen’s letter to the mayor of Sydney, Australia, is as follows:
Greetings. On a suitable day of your choosing in the year 2085, please open this envelope and deliver to the citizens of Sydney my message to them.
The structure housing the vault was officially opened in 1898 in honour of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. In 1954, the late Queen made her first trip to Australia. She was the nation’s first reigning monarch to travel there. Queen Elizabeth II has made 16 trips to Australia in total.
